A good place to start talking about Kyouko Kirigiri is what could be inferred from her role early on in the game. She seems like an expy of every pastel-colour palette, quiet, emotionless anime girl you see in popular canons, but while it's true that these are traits that she has, they are not what makes up her entire character.
But for simplicity's sake, let's start with the obvious.
Kirigiri has an "ice queen" demeanor, meaning that she comes off as unfriendly and stoic to most people at a first glance. Even Naegi makes this observation when they first meet, and her briefness in speech doesn't help much. The girl is a complete enigma; she was the only student whom Naegi was not able to find information on prior to coming to Hope's Peak Academy, and she even "refuses" to tell him small details, like what her Super High School Level talent is. She doesn't speak unless it's required, which does bring about an air of suspicion when the murders begin to occur.
However, she proves to be very good at proving her innocence in crimes due to her impeccable use of logic and deductive talent during investigations. She is not only cold, but calm and calculating - her silence is a tool she uses to think and analyze the environment and she almost always keeps a cool head, whether she is responding to Monobear's distasteful comments, providing a sort of distant comfort through formulating a plan or examining a corpse. She's able to find the smaller details and clues that normal-boy Naegi misses - if we didn't know any better, we'd think she was trained to look for this stuff! Ha ha ha.
Well as it turns out, she really was trained to look for this stuff. She was given the title of "Super High School Level Detective" upon being selected as a Hope's Peak Academy student, but a bout of forced amnesia forced her to forget it among many other key memories. She comes from a long line of defectives, and takes great pride in her family name. However, she was willing to "taint" that honour to manipulate her way into Hope's Peak Academy, in order to tell her father, the headmaster, that she was cutting off all ties with him. The subject of relations with her father are one of the few things that can make Kirigiri lose her cool.
Despite Kirigiri's utter genius in detective work giving her an unmatched deductive eye, there are a few things her profession requires that don't translate well to everyday life. Several students pointed out that she had a "habit of wandering off" which could obviously lead to suspicion, while in reality she was trying to stay a few steps ahead in terms of knowledge to assist her deductions. She openly admits to not being good at relying on people, and doesn't trust them easily. She was even prepared to tell her own father that she wanted nothing to do with him in person. She did eventually opt to trust Naegi (in an event that literally decided whether she would live or die), but that was late into the game's plot. Until then, her trust in any of the other students was dubious or temporary at best.
We also know that while Kirigiri has a high tolerance for tough subjects like murder and betrayal, but even that was not enough to protect her from eventually falling into despair by Junko's hand, just like her fellow students (minus Naegi). Her SHSL Detective skills got her far, but it was Naegi's SHSL Hope abilities that were able to save her in the end.
Kirigiri's main role in Dangan Ronpa could be summed up within her name; the Japanese characters it is made up of mean "fog cutter", and her actions within the game's plot probably could not be explained better. While Naegi takes up the role of main protagonist, Kirgiri takes up a secondary, more "background" role. She doesn't want the spotlight and glory of ~solving the murder~ by any means; she simply uses her professional observations provide clarity ("cutting through the fog") to the clues that Naegi finds throughout the game. She knows that he has to be the one to put the puzzle pieces of each case together, but she does her best to give him the backup he needs."To solve a mystery, one must be fully aware of the risks, and keep on going anyway. Don't you agree?"
